Having revisited some of the material I once used in teaching a course on
Heresy and Dissent, I find that the Patarines of Milan had ties to the
Gregorian reform, wherever they may have gone thereafter in dissent. The
other point worth mentioning pertains to the Waldensians. Ed Peters
underlines the mocking reception Valdes received in Rome, which helped
push his followers into dissidence. Innocent III's creative responses,
reconciling the Humiliati and embracing Francis, look all the more
remarkable in the light of such material.
