>There are not many celebrations of the earthly birthday of a saint - usually the feast is celebrated
on the heavenly birthday, i.e. the day of the saint's death. The only three which come to mind are:
The birthday of Our Lord, i.e. Christmas; this is clearly quite exceptional.
The birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which falls on 8th September. This is a fairly minor Marian
feast, dependent on the theologically more significant Immaculate Conception, which falls on 8th
December.
The birthday of John the Baptist, 24th June.
The births of Jesus and of John the Baptist are both recorded in the New Testament and are
attended with certain remarkable, indeed miraculous, circumstances, which make them worthy of
celebration. That of Mary is, as I say, dependent upon the Immaculate Conception.
Elasticus.
