My name is Felicitas Schmieder; I am teaching medieval history at the=20
Goethe-University of Frankfurt am Main/Germany. I wrote my PhD Thesis=20
about the image of the mongols in the christian west (13th to 15th=20
centuries), especially - from the point of view of medieval religion - the=
=20
mission and, even more important, the very different places the mongols wer=
e=20
given in the "history of the future". By now I=B4m working on the medieval=
=20
urban history of Frankfurt with a special interest on the different=20
saints as patrons of the altars (St. Bartholomew, St. George, Three Kings=
=20
and so on)
Having had technical problems with my e-mail server, I had missed this
message at the time when it was posted to the list, and so it seems a bit
late for the enthousiastic welcome which I feel cribbling in my finger tips.
But I think the dissertation of our new member nevertheless still deserves
to have its title cited in full:
SCHMIEDER, Felicitas
Europa und die Fremden. Die Mongolen im Urteil des Abendlan-
des vom 13. bis in das 15. Jahrhundert. Sigmaringen: Jan
Thorbecke Verlag, 1993 (= Beitra"ge zur Geschichte und Quel-
lenkunde des Mittelalters)
Those who are working on this topic may also be interested to know that Sven
Do"rper (Freie Universitaet Berlin, Institut fuer Romanische Philologie) has
recently presented as his dissertation a critical edition of Jean le Long's
_Traittiez des estas et des conditions de quatorze royaumes de Aise_ (1351),
a retranslation of the _Flos historiarum terre Orientis_ of Hethum/Hayton of
Korykos' _Flor des estoires de la terre d'Orient_ (1307), which was one of
the most important medieval sources for Occidental knowledge about the
history and culture of the Mongols. It is a pity that Do"rper did not reedit
the Old French original (17 MSS) or the Latin version (29 MSS and several
early printed editions), but confined himself to le Long's less important
Middle French retranslation (4 MSS, 1 early print). But his philological
classification of the manuscripts of all three versions and his parallel
reproduction of one of the Latin MSS (Wroclaw, Bibl. Uniw. R. 262) in his
apparatus offer still an important contribution and many corrections to the
edition of the OF original and parallel Latin text in the _Recueil des
historiens des croisades_ (Documents arme/niens, II, 1906, ed. Ch. Kohler).
I don't have the exact reference at hand, but Do"rper's edition will be
published within the next time, and I could provide the reference if you
contact me off the list.
