Thanks for the clarification. I'd be interested in tracing the earliest
(pre-13thc.?) list of pilgrimage shrines which classify them as either
amongst the "maiores" or the "minores". Thomas de Cantimpre's list--Rome,
Jerusalem, Trier, Cologne--was, I think, rather eccentric compared to
Gui's, because it omitted Canterbury and Santiago. Jerusalem was no longer
in Christian hands, and Trier was certainly not--unless I am mistaken,
always a possibility!--amongst the "maiores" of Christendom. Yet both Gui
and Cantimpre make an equal division of northern and southern "maiores",
which is itself interesting.
