Dear All: Since the Latin Joke thing will not die, please let me
explain: They really have nothing to do with Latin at all, except in
appearance. They are schoolchildren's jokes. Just read them out, with a
thick English accent, and listen to what you are saying:
Brutus adsum jam forte
Caesar ad erat
Brutus sic in omnibus
Caesar sic inat
That is: Brutus had some jam for tea
Caesar had a rat
Brutus sick in omnibus
Caesar sick in hat
The original one started:
O Sibilli si ergo
Fortibuses in ero
That is:
Oh! See Billy!
See her go
Forty Busses in a row, etc.
As for semper ubi sub ubi. You know that semper means always, ubi means
where, and sub means under. Just translate it and listen to what you say.
It ain't highbrow humor, folks. David Flory, Purdue University
