In response to recent letters to this forum regarding the problems of
international conferences and the need for more `local' events:
May I remind everyone that the Postgraduate Forum is holding a
conference `Postgraduates and Critical Human Geography' on 19th July,
at the University of Nottingham.
The conference will consist of two sessions. The morning session will
be an opportunity for current or recent postgraduates to talk about
`The postgraduate experience' . Short papers (of 10 to 20 minutes)
will allow speakers to discuss the major methodological and
theoretical issues that they have encountered in their work. We hope
that postgraduates will want to illustrate their talks with reference
to their own personal experiences, and that these sessions will also
be an opportunity for postgraduates to introduce and present some of
their work to fellow researchers.
The second session will begin with keynote address from two
contributors to recent debates over `critical geography' - Tim Unwin
and Joe Painter. There will then follow an `open forum' for the
discussion of points raised and other issues connected with the idea
of `critical human geography', especially as these relate to the
practice of postgraduate research.
All are welcome to attend, but please note that places are limited to
30, and it is important that those wishing to contribute, whether to
present a paper or to attend the discussions, should contact either
Ben Cowell or Steve Cooke as soon as possible. The conference is free
of charge. Limited accomodation can be arranged by contacting Ben
Cowell.
Thanks.
