Re Duncan's message on the difficulties for him and other British
postgrads to attend the CGF conference in Vancouver:
1) Tim Unwin had suggested to me (Liisa Cormode) that the
Postgraduate Forum consider asking the RGS-IBG for money to fund
postgraduate students to attend the Vancouver conference. I think it
would be a good idea if someone could approach Tim about this, if he
hasn't read this message (he has previously been on this listserver)
and it is felt that such funding would be appropriate. (see below
for other funding ideas).
2) Airlines do offer special conference/event fares if a certain
number of people are travelling together, or separately, to an event.
This is also a common practice in Canada and the U.S. - e.g. the AAG
annual conference has special airfares. I would suggest that someone
seriously consider approaching Air Canada or Canadian Airlines about
this - I strongly suspect they would be more receptive than the likes
of British Airways.
3) Another possibility might be that there is funding for academic
links between the U.K. and Canada, including short-term visits and
institutional links. The British Council and certain U.K.-Canada
groups have such funding. From the notices I've seen I think the
British Council would be a good body to approach.
4) This probably goes without saying, but for those wanting to
combine academic pursuits with a fantastic holiday, Vancouver is
absolutely wonderful....

5 or 10%, this may still be helpful.
