Suppose members of the CGF were to 'distance' themselves from the RGS/IBG and
set up some rival organisation. What, then, would be the ethical impication of - for
example -
(a) accepting a medal from the RGS for 'services to geography', and
(b) continuing to use the RGS library and archives for research?
In response to (a) (in the wholly unlikely event of ever being offered a medal from any
organisation with the word 'Royal' attached to it) I would have no problems rejecting
it.
In response to (b) I would have qualms about no longer using the RGS research
facilities.
These may seem trivial (and perhaps hypothetical) points but they do raise the
question of how much distance the CGF might make make between it and the RGS.
