Up until now I've quite enjoyed being a lurker - watching the world and
various debates pass by - great this e-mail. I'd love to lurk at the
conference in Vancouver, but unfortunately I can't really see
any possible means of attending given the high costs involved - no matter
how 'exclusionary' people feel e-mail is, I would expect that more people
(and especially postgraduates like myself) have access to a computer
terminal, than to around 500 pounds for high season air-fare (+
accommodation, expenses, pre-registration registration fee, duty-frees...)
I think Felix Driver initiated a discussion relating to vancouver and
postgrads some time ago, but I'm as yet unaware of any real solutions to
this problem, save for the ESRC possibly stumping up enough 'reddies' to
allow 28 more people to go (what about other postgrads, what about
undergraduates?)
The great thing about how this network has developed is the relatively
high level of accessibilty to a wide range of possible contributors -
would it not be more radical and critical to think of ways in which this
diversity of interest can be maintained/developed, rather than at another
expensive conference?
