dear all
i'm sure none of you are terribly concerned over my abilities, at least
until i get in to print, but i thought it worth making a couple of
points. One is that although my latin is poor [servicable for
inquisition records and related documents; excreable for anything else]
i do recognise that the better one's knowledge, the more nuanced one's
insight [although i have also found that my lack of familiarity with the
language has in some ways aided research, since i struggle equally with
all elements and therefore take nothing "for granted", thus provoking
some interesting questions about inquisition discourse ...]. I also note
George's point that most of us have access to skilled Latinists who are
such kindly creatures as to help the less fortunate.
What i would like to point out, though, was that the original debate
around Sol's poem and the replies was not so much to do with skill as to
do with assumptions about [elite] communities. I don't for a minute
think that anyone was replying viciously or to deliberately patronise;
but i do think that the politics of it were questionable ...
cheers
