Manuscripts with Music: Production and Use
The Seminar in the History of the Book to 1500
Sixth Biennial Conference in Oxford, 12-14 July 1996
The Seminar in the History of the Book to 1500 holds its 6th biennial
conference 12-14 July 1996 in Oxford, on the theme of the production
and use of manuscripts with music, both sacred and secular. The
approach is interdisciplinary, and papers treat general questions of
medieval book production: where manuscripts were made, when and
for whom.
Several papers treat small books made for an individual's use; some
treat deluxe manuscripts such as the choir books of the Sistine
Chapel and the Cantigas manuscripts made for King Alfonso X, with
special attention to the problems faced by scribes and artists in
integrating complex elements. Other papers raise literary and
liturgical questions.
