I appreciate the response about the invisible/visible church in the MA. As
I said in my original post, I realize, as many of you have pointed out,
that this notion was prevelant among "heretical" groups particularly in the
12th through 14th centuries, and even later.
But it seems as though heresy is the primary context in which the doctrine
of invisible/visible church was discussed--and from the perspective of the
Roman Church, would be anathamatized. In other words, I am at a loss to
find a discussion (similar to Augustine's) about this among the "orthodox"
theologians outside the context of heresy. Of course even Augustine was
dealing with heresy to a certain degree.
