Dear William
if you are interested in Inquisition from its inception in Languedoc in
the early 13th century, there is a wealth of published primary and
secondary material. If you want to follow this up, I can mail you a
vast amount of material privately [not that I want to deprive the rest of
the list, but it seems silly to take up too much space]. For now, I'll
just mention a couple of things:
H.C.Lea *A History of the Inquisition in the Middle Ages* - 3 vols. [1888]
H.Maisonneuve *Etudes sur les origines de l'Inquisition* [1960]
B.Hamilton *The Medieval Inquisition* [1984]
G.Mollat (ed.) *Manuel de l'Inquisiteur Bernard Gui* 2 vols
J.Duvernoy (ed) *Le Registre de l'Inquisiteur Jacques Fournier* - 3vols
of latin, and 3 vols of French translation
These are just a few of the main things. If your interest is connected
to the theme of "confession", there are lots of more specific works to
look at, and a few dangers on the way. Hopefully my thesis will be
finished by then, and I can refer you to that! [shameless
self-publicizing i know ...]
HOpe you have a good time in France
cheers
