John the Baptist was quite significant for the Carthusians, who
originated in the 1080s; he was considered a forerunner of monasticism
and a practioner of the eremitic life. I do not have access
to my bibliographical
databases at present but will look for appropriate secondary citations.
You might want to look at the Carthusian statutes (PL 153 or in Sources
Chretiennes, vol. 308, I think), which have a chapter near the end in
praise of solitude in which John the Baptist should figure. The SC
edition may have some helpful secondary literature citations.
