You might want to take a look at Christopher Tyerman, _England and
the Crusades, 1095-1588_ (University of Chicago Press, 1988) on this. Also,
Joe Strayer's chapter on "The Political Crusades of the Thirteenth Century,"
in vol. 2 of the _History of the Crusades_ ed. Kenneth Setton et al., is
still very useful.
