Regarding the translations you seek, it occurs to me that one did not
"go on crusade" in the Middle Ages, one took up the cross. Neither did
one "get baptized," one recieved the sign of the cross. These are
metaphorical only in our rather limited contemproary sense of the literal.
I don't think you can take the cross out of your translations, for the
cross is, happily, the crux of the matter.
