I gather I should introduce myself rather than merely admiring conversations
electronically, so here goes:
I am a Canadian doing late medieval Scottish social/religious history at an
American university (I've only been here since Sept 1995), with my PhD from
Glasgow University, so I am somewhat unsure of myself in most environments,
notably that of computer lists. My thesis treated late medieval lay faith
in Scotland, using artistic, literary and record evidence. I have a strong
background in standard "institutional" history, as this is where I began my
thesis work, but I ended up working closely with literary and artistic
sources, the latter being scarce thanks to Scottish "Reformers".
I have a few projects on the go at the moment, in particular a somewhat
general study of medieval women saints in Scotland; I would certainly
appreciate any advice about good books/articles relating to SS Anne,
Barbara, and Catherine of Alexandria in the late medieval period,
particularly with regards to iconography and literature, since my background
in these areas is wanting. I also will be working on Scottish literature as
it was used to advise women on religious matters (the Middle Scots makars
are essential to my task). Again, I would be pleased to receive comments
from any literary experts who have some advice to give me of a theoretical
or specific nature.
I look forward to conversations on the list.

* local legend has it that the town was named in honour of the gold rush -
confusing, I grant, but it means people envy me for living near a beach,
rather than pity me for experiencing the joys of post-industrial America
(Actually, this place is fascinating for an historian interested in
industrialisation, which I am.)
