I have been lurking on this list for a little while, and don't think I
have introduced myself yet. (End of term amnesia...) I am half way
through an M.A. in the Dept of Religion and Culture at Wilfrid Laurier
University, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. In the fall I will be reading
Julian of Norwich for the first time; this will also be my first dip back
into the medieval period in quite a number of years. I am interested in
church history, and would especially like to understand better the
impulse to divide which has always been a part of it; it seems an
unavoidable part of human nature, and a continual paradox in a community
founded on ideals of unity. I am also reading with great interest about
current issues of theory and analysis that developed in the last
decade or so while my back was turned. I suppose these have had their
impact on medieval scholarship, and I'm sure I'll be running into
them when reading up on Julian.
Dr. Wright: Unfortunately I'm too far away to come to your
class on Piers Plowman etc., but may I have a look at your
reading list? I would like to know more about the "obvious dichotomy"
between social & individual spirituality that you mentioned.
