While I was away, several people wrote either to the list or to Carolyn
directly (funny how people know where to turn in times of trouble, as
nobody wrote to me!), noting that they had not been receiving messages for
some time. Upon investigation, it turned out that close to 40 list members
mysteriously 'disappeared' from the list at some point in early April.
This sort of thing has no precedent, either in my experience or in that of
Mailbase; a first hypothesis is that these problems were tied directly to
certain sites, as everyone who was a member at, for example, Harvard or
Columbia 'disappeared'. (That is, it was not the case that one person at
Harvard disappeared while another remained on the list; everyone at
Harvard disappeared.)
So, after some plodding work, we think that we managed to resubscribe to
the list everyone who was affected by this incident. These people will
have (or at least should have) received messages recently, informing them
that they 'joined' the list.
If you know of anyone who was affected by this, I would be grateful if you
could inform me of that person's name (and, ideally, e-mail address).
More importantly, if you found yourself not receiving messages, it would
be of immense service to me if you could tell me when this began. This
should be relatively easy, given that Carolyn Muessig posted her FEAST
messages extremely regularly (unlike someone else I know).
And if in future something similar should ever occur and you should wish
to inform us of the incident, it would be a good idea to write not only to
the listownership address ([log in to unmask]) but
also to the Mailbase helpline ([log in to unmask]).
If you were off the list for a while, do check the list archives, in order
to catch up on the discussions and on the super FEAST messages.
And finally, if you attempted to post to the list during this period and
found it impossible to do so, PLEASE TRY AGAIN! ! ! ! ! ! We need to know
what you have to say.
Thanks to all for your help and your understanding (as if such things can
be understood by non-nuclear physicists...)!
