I teach medieval and renaissance English literature at Calvin College in
Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. I have edited a student anthology of Middle
English lyrics of the Virgin Mary, to be published in the TEAMS Middle
English Texts Series. Research for introductory material and notes has
taken me well beyond textual studies and into a fascination with medieval
Christianity. (Yes, I am a Lutheran teaching mostly Calvinist students
about the Virgin Mary. They often voice their suspicion that some of these
medieval Christians sound Catholic. Yeeeeessssss... So I am aware of the
need for rather basic instruction in religious history and liturgical
traditions.)
TEAMS is the Consortium for the Teaching of the Middle Ages; each year the
organization sponsors several sessions at the International Congress on
Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo. We also publish a short newsletter twice a
year. For both forums I welcome topic suggestions and materials related to
the teaching of the Middle Ages.
