Today, 16 April, is the feast of ...
Optatus and his Companions, and Encratis, martyrs (304): The memory of
these martyrs is preserved in a very gory poem by Prudentius.
Turibius, bishop of Astorga (450): Preached against the Priscillianists.
Paternus or Pair, bishop of Avranches (564)
Fructuosus, archbishop of Braga (665)
Magnus of Orkney, martyr (1116)
Drogo or Druon (1189): Drogo was a shepherd who lived near Valenciennes.
In spite of his humble position he was regarded by the local people as a
saint. The locals claimed that whilst tending his flocks in the fields he
had been seen assisting at the holy sacrifice in distant churches. This
afterwards gave rise to a local saying: "Not being St Drogo, I cannot be
in two places at once."
Contardo, pilgrim (1249): While making his way to Compostela, he saw the
town of Broni. He prayed that he might die in that beautiful place if God
willed that he should end his days away from Ferrara. God willed it.
Joachim of Siena, Servite (1305): Sometimes he would fall into ecstasy
while the Eucharist was being offered.
William of Polizzi, friar/hermit (1317): Having been tempted by the beauty
of a woman he gave up his mendicant life and withdrew to a solitary life
in the Sicilian mountains.
