TL;DR: *A new Halfway to the Future symposium is coming up later this year!*
Please submit your work and join us in discussing the past, present, and
future of design-oriented HCI on Oct 21-23 in Santa Cruz, CA (US).

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the whole organizing committee, I'm delighted to invite you to
participate in our upcoming Halfway to the Future (HTTF) 2024 symposium
<https://www.halfwaytothefuture.net/>, which will take place in Santa Cruz,
CA (US) on October 21-23. For those who may not be familiar with it, HTTF
originated in 2019 as a one-off event
<https://www.halfwaytothefuture.net/2019/> in Nottingham (UK), organized by
the Mixed Reality Lab. It sought to bring together HCI designers and
researchers in all career stages to discuss the past, present, and future
of design-oriented HCI. Many of us had a blast at that event (myself
included!) and thought the conversations it gave rise to should be given
continuity. Five years later, we propose gathering anew to extend the
collegial, visionary, insightful atmosphere of the original HTTF.

Halfway to the Future 2024 will be structured around four key themes
driving research in design-oriented HCI. Following the original HTTF’19
structure, each theme will be addressed by a dedicated panel, where authors
will briefly present their work and then engage in a broader roundtable
discussion. Panel discussions will be anchored by one or more featured
speakers discussing one of their influential texts. The event will also
include opportunities to show and share design work in conversational
forums such as a poster session and informal demos. The themes for HTTF'24
are as follows:

Plurality of humanness: How do our identities shape how we design and
receive technologies? How best to address/adapt to this knowledge in
shaping our future? How do we do justice to diversity?

Provocation: Shaowen Bardzell reflecting on Feminist HCI: taking stock and
outlining an agenda for design

More-than-humanness: How do we design for the planet and not just humans?

Provocation: Ron Wakkary reflecting on Things we could design: For more
than human-centered worlds

Reflective Practices with AI: What role does and should machine
‘intelligence’ play in shaping the design of our future?

Provocation: Terry Winograd reflecting on Understanding Computers and
Cognition

New ways of knowing: What are our ‘ways of knowing’ in HCI design research?
How may they need to change and grow to address the themes above?

Provocations: Paul Dourish reflecting on Where the Action Is, and Kristina
Höök reflecting on Designing with the body: Somaesthetic interaction design

Submission Information:

We invite papers (up to 6,000 words, excl. references) and pictorials (up
to 8 pages, excl. references) addressing current work relating to the
themes above, especially those building on or responding to the influential
works to be discussed. We also invite short papers (up to 2,000 words,
excl. references) or pictorials (up to 4 pages, excl. references) looking
towards the future of these themes. Papers can take the form of projected
projects, design fictions, manifestos, or anything that fires your
imagination. Accepted papers not chosen for panels will be invited to be
presented in poster format.

For information on preparing a submission, including the templates to use,
please read the submission guidelines on the website
<https://www.halfwaytothefuture.net/2024/submit/>. All submissions will be
reviewed by at least two experts in the field and the process will be
double-blind. We anticipate publishing all accepted papers in the Halfway
to the Future 2024 Proceedings in the ACM Digital Library, as part of the
ACM International Conference Proceedings Series (ICPS).

*Submission deadline:* May 31 (EoD AoE)

*Notifications:* June 30 (EoD AoE)

*Conference dates:* October 21-23, 2024
