The limit/no limit conference, as part of the Art Design Research Conference, invites artists, designers, researchers, and anyone interested to reflect on the notion of limit in the context of research in art and design in France. In a world marked by the exhaustion of Western political systems and the impact on the environment of our models of production, how can we rethink current societal and environmental issues by proposing critical and creative approaches?
The limit/no limit conference proposes to explore different historical and geographical scales of the notion of limit, by addressing the following questions:
● How did artists and designers of the 20th century participate in the experience of a world without limits?
● How has the notion of limit evolved in the worlds of art and design in the face of the finitude of our planet and the deterioration of nature caused by our own excesses?
● How can research in art and design contribute to contemporary debates through questioning its own multiple temporalities and formats of documentation?
● How can the creation of common tools and the establishment of interdisciplinary transversalities help to rethink conventional models of research and creation?
The limit/no limit conference offers various activities such as presentations, publications, exhibitions, workshops, and podcasts, to explore methodological limits and ways of overcoming them in the context of research in art and design. We encourage presentation proposals that reflect a critical and reflective approach, as well as contributions that present concrete examples of interdisciplinary and durable collaborations.
Alongside the conferences, 3 round tables will be devoted to the challenges of international research, research training and publicising research.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out!
Best regards,

Nathalie Guimbretière

The international conference limit/no limit addresses the notion of limit across different historical and geographical scales in the context of research in art and design. Contributions are welcomed in various forms, including scientific articles, exhibitions, podcasts, and workshops. The conference aims to explore the limits and potentials of art and design in the face of the contemporary challenges posed by the modernization of societies and the rise of the globalized capitalist model of production, by proposing critical and creative approaches for a deeper understanding of current societal issues. Contributions should focus on questioning conventional models of research and creation, as well as on creating new, practice-based paradigms to guide interdisciplinary reflections. Submissions should contribute to contemporary debates by questioning their own multiple temporalities and documentation formats, while creating new communities and contributing to thinking about the future. The conference offers a workspace to explore the limits and means of surpassing them in the context of knowledge production in art and design.

Three tracks are proposed:
1. RESOURCES / Art and design research for new links between human communities and natural resources.
2. SYSTEMS / How do art and design contribute to building new models of society?
3. EPISTEMOLOGY / How do art and design contribute to the creation of new modes of knowledge?
