Music for falling asleep, music during sleep, music about sleep – Sleep music will be the focus of an interdisciplinary conference from 2 to 4 May 2024 held by the Department of Musicology at the University of Regensburg.
Composers of folk, art, and popular music alike approach the subject of sleep from a range of perspectives and, depending on the context, stress sleep music’s childlike, religious, or even erotic potential. Genres of sleep music vary greatly and range from lullabies and sleepwalking scenes in opera to instrumental music (Berceuse, Nocturne) to religious music.
How are topics such as dreams, nightmares, evening, night or the moon expressed in music and literature? Are there musical characteristics that often appear in combination with sleep? How is sleep music linked to specific cultural practices? What are the physiological, sleep-inducing effects of listening to music? How are soothing digital listening spaces created today through Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) and soundscapes?
Contributions not only from musicology but also from related disciplines such as somnology, psychology, neurosciences, literary studies, sound studies and ethnomusicology are encouraged. The conference’s focus on sleep music does not have temporal, stylistic, or geographic restrictions. The wide range of applicable themes raises the possibility for connections, breaks, and continuities. A broad range of contributions will help elucidate how music can promote, depict, or even prevent sleep.
The keynote address will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Eckart Altenmüller (Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover).
Papers (20 minutes + 10 minutes of discussion) can be given in either German or English. Early career scholars are most welcome to apply. The conference will include a concert with sleep music from different centuries and regions. To apply, please send an abstract (about 250 words) as well as a short biography (roughly 120 words) by 30 November 2023 to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] We will inform you before Christmas if your presentation has been accepted.
