André Jolivet 2024: International Conference
Conservatoire national Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP)
Deadline for proposals: June 15, 2023
Languages: French and English
Organising Committee: Yves Balmer, Lucie Kayas
On the 50th anniversary of the death of Andre Jolivet (1905–1974), the CNSMDP is organising an international conference devoted to the composer. The conference will take place on 14 and 15 March 2024 at the CNSMDP and Bibliotheque nationale de France (Richelieu); Salon Vinteuil and Salle d'orgue (CNSMDP) and Salle des conferences (BnF Richelieu). Each day of the conference will conclude with a concert of Jolivet's works given by students of the Paris Conservatoire.
Co-founder of the Groupe Jeune-France with Yves Baudrier, Daniel-Lesur and Olivier Messiaen in 1936, Jolivet composed an avant-garde music that combines incantation with atonality (Mana, 1935). As much primitivist, neo-classicist as modernist, he engaged with diverse trends, his entire output demonstrating a melodic invention born of the Incantations pour flute (1936) as well as a telluric rhythmic and orchestral power inherited from Varese. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1966 to 1970.
Following the pioneering work of Bridget Conrad (1994), Jolivet scholarship has been enriched with several major publications since. These works have revealed the great diversity of Jolivet's contribution as a whole. This conference aims to reflect on existing research on the composer and in so doing open up new avenues of enquiry. Discussion will focus, but not necessarily exclusively, on four principal areas:
• sketch studies;
• interpretation and performance;
• reception and legacy;
• pedagogy and influence.
Presentation formats may vary, from the classic 20-minute paper to a workshop-type presentation investigating sources. Diverse approaches are encouraged; in addition to academic research papers, presentations are welcomed from performers (students and professionals).
Proposals (in either French or English) should include the following:
• Title of paper and an abstract of not more than 500 words
• short biography of the presenter (maximum 100 words)
• institutional affiliation (where applicable)
• Postal address, telephone and email address
