Early Music Performance & Research (formerly Early Music Performer), the Journal of the National Early Music Association (UK) invites submissions for two upcoming issues, Winter 2023 and Spring 2024.
The bi-annual journal is a valued publication in the field of performance practice and early music research edited by Samuel Teague<https://www.music.ox.ac.uk/people/samuel-teague>. With contributions by leading performers and scholars, reports, news items, and reviews of recent publications, it appeals to a broad spectrum of early music lovers, students, musicians and academics with interests in performance practice and research into early music.
Deadline for submission of content for the Winter 2023 issue is 31 July 2023, for which we welcome submissions of any topic (see below).
The deadline for the Spring 2024 issue will be 31 January 2024, and we invite content focusing on William Byrd, Thomas Weelkes, or John Playford (or anyone else who had a 400th anniversary in 2023). This will be the 25th anniversary issue of the journal.
The remit of the journal has shifted from exclusively performance-related topics. Relevant topics still include the study of notation and performance, historical recordings, under-performed repertoire, any music-historical or organological topic of special relevance to research on historical performance, but may also include any item of research that may be deemed to fall into the category of early music. Articles are sent out for peer-review, usually to a member of the editorial board, before acceptance.
Articles, reports, and reviews will be entirely open-access, and available free via the National Early Music Association (UK) website. Articles should also be visible on institutional search engines using Ex Libris metadata.
Articles are usually between 4000 and 6500 words in length, although shorter submissions are welcome (these could take the form of responses to recent historically-informed performances, for example). They may be paired with a supplemental material, such as: a complete piece of music (which has not been published before, or in a reliable edition, or with parts); audio recordings or excerpts for examples; video recordings. Supplements are published electronically on the NEMA website, but may also be published without a connection to journal content. Short supplements in score can be published within the journal itself as well as electronically.
Queries, submissions (be that articles, or items for review), and suggestions for news/report coverage should be sent to the editor: [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
