The final seminar in the online series on music and data will take place on Thursday May 11th at 4pm. The speaker will be Andrea Schiavio (York University)
4E Cognitive Science and Embodied Musical Synergies.
This talk introduces the notion of embodied musical synergies from a perspective that brings together empirical and conceptual research. The traditional view of the musical mind as an information-processing device operating in our head is contrasted with innovative perspectives that highlight its embodied, embedded, extended, and enactive dimensions. These perspectives are informed by action-based and interactive understandings on musical thought and action, and are supported by a range of recent qualitative and quantitative studies on musical development, learning, and teaching. This blend of empirical and theoretical research prompts examination of a broad spectrum of musical synergies which emerge in musical behaviour, necessitating a comprehensive reassessment of the concept of the musical mind.
