Dear all,
The Dance Music Cultures Research Group (DMCRG) at the University of York are pleased to announce a call for proposals for their inaugural conference to launch the research group in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies at the University of York on 3rd July 2023. The theme of this year’s conference centres around inclusion, exclusion and accessibility in global dance music cultures. These themes have always been central to dance music culture, with togetherness, the collective, PLUR, and dance music as uniting permeating discourse across academic research, and the global dance music community and industry. However, recent debate has turned to casting a critical eye towards exclusion and accessibility, with debates emerging around door policies, intersectionality and gender, to name a few. While these debates appear more recently in discussion around dance music culture, they have been critical to its development and have been ever present throughout dance music’s rich and varied musical, cultural and social history.
We would like to invite colleagues across disciplines, at varying stages of their career, from postgraduate researchers, to ECRs, to more senior colleagues, to submit proposals for paper presentations (20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions) and panel discussions. Practitioners are welcome to submit expositions of their work in this area, and other formats of presentation in this area are welcome (lecture performances/film/musical composition).
Researchers across disciplines are welcome to present and may focus on varying aspects of dance music cultures, including, but not restricted to:
- Historical accounts of inclusion, exclusion and accessibility in global genres, communities and scenes;
- General themes of inclusion, exclusion and accessibility in contemporary dance music cultures;
- Documentation, analysis and commentary on club spaces and architectures;
- Feminist perspectives and critiques of dance music culture;
- Disability in dance music culture;
- Analysis and critique of online/non-physical club spaces and communities;
- Analysis and critique of new technologies, or presentation of technologies that may foster or act as a barrier to inclusion;
- Intersectionality in dance music culture;
- Critical theory and club culture;
- Policy and societal attitudes towards club culture;
- Methodologies for dance music cultures research.
The DMCRG is committed to robust and representative research around dance music cultures, providing empirical, practice-led and theory-based accounts of dance music cultures contemporarily and historically. Submissions will be peer-reviewed and should be submitted by Tuesday 23rd May 2023 at 4pm. Presenters should submit an abstract of 250 words maximum, plus a 100 word maximum biography. Presenters will have 20 minutes to present and 10 minutes for questions. Panel discussions will last 1 hour, and should also include a 250-word abstract, plus a list of up to 5 panel members, and short biographies for each. Please send your proposals and biographies to [log in to unmask]
The conference will be a one day conference in person at the School of Arts and Creative Technologies at the University of York. There is no registration fee for the conference. Food and drink will be provided.
This project is funded by Research England’s Enhancing Research Culture fund, awarded by the University of York.
We look forward to receiving your applications. Please do not hesitate to email [log in to unmask] if you have any questions.
All best
Jack
