Cultural relations between Switzerland and South Africa, 1948–1994
Conference, 3 – 5 May 2023, Basel
The relationship between Switzerland and South Africa has been the subject of extensive research over the past two decades. However, the focus has until now been on the role that Swiss business and politics played as enablers for the apartheid state. A research project running from 2019 to 2023 at the Bern Academy of the Arts (HKB), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), has aimed instead to shed light on cultural relations between the two countries from the beginnings of apartheid in 1948 through to the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994.
To conclude this project, the Bern Academy of the Arts will be holding a conference from Wednesday 3 May to Friday 5 May 2023 in Basel in Switzerland, hosted by the Basler Afrika Bibliographien<https://www.baslerafrika.ch/> in collaboration with the Centre for African Studies Basel<https://zasb.unibas.ch/en/> and Africa Open Institute<https://aoinstitute.ac.za/> of the University of Stellenbosch, and funded by the SNSF.
The papers to be given are on a wide variety of topics, from Swiss architects in apartheid South Africa to South African jazz musicians in Swiss exile, from Swiss literature in Afrikaans translation to Sesotho literature in Swiss translations, South African musicians working in Switzerland, and even the impact of Swiss yodelling on Afrikaans popular culture. The conference will also feature the launch of a book documenting the life and letters of Gordon Jephtas<https://www.baslerafrika.ch/product/jephtas/>, a South African pianist who overcome the hurdles placed before him by the apartheid state and forged a career as an opera coach in Switzerland and America, working with all the international stars from Pavarotti to Caballé.
The conference will be held in hybrid form. Attendance is free. Those wishing to attend in person should register here<https://www.hkb.bfh.ch/en/news/events-for-specialists/forschung-cultural-relations-ch-za/> in advance (for catering purposes).
