Hi Luke,
An interesting provocative point of view. I tend to look at Chomsky’s contribution as highly systematic rather than scientific. As a science, it would have to provide consistent and repeatable and evidence of its claims. This is yet to happen. It is, if you like, an elaborated and sometimes plausible account of how language came to be. It is a kind of intellectual fiction that some researchers find interesting.
As to linguistics being ‘a faculty of mind’ , there is a long history of unresolved philosophical debate on this subject. Any Encyclopedia of Philosophy will offer to take you down these rabbit holes.
Perhaps it is worth looking at the metaphors at play within this complex of ideas before offering a new ontology.
Assertions—like the one made by Don Normal in response to your provocation—claiming that:
> Design ability is something that everyone has, to some extent, because it is embedded in our brains as a natural cognitive function.
Such declarations are a tribute to Don’s mastery and use of the contemporary metaphors we all play with, whether or not we regard such things as toys, weapons (to mix more metaphors) or descriptions of how the world really is.
Carry on with the reinvention!
David
