*To what extent have other members of this list also sought out and applied
research findings on Vision and Ideation outside the traditional domains of
design to positive effect within research/practice/teaching? NOT
sketching, decentralized design thinking exercises, but specific methods
extracted from fields such as neuroscience, archaeology, or otherwise? **What
have you learned? *
A few years back I had the idea there must be something out there (beyond design) to help understand the role and use of external design representations. Representations used as expressions of design intent (i.e. sketches and others) when thinking while designing (design thinking?). My search took me to embodied and then distributed cognition - as means to scaffold an understand of interaction between design representation and design cognition. Sadly still yet to embark on serious project to validate DC's explanatory power when applied to design thinking (thinking while designing).
If I've missed any key works (highly probable) or if others want to pitch in with ideas/experience of 'distributed design thinking'?
Best,
James.

Hi Mitchell,
You might look to Embodied Design Ideation methods. I have an article that can serve as a starting point. It discusses 8 methods by different authors, and explicates a framework that was developed and tested through a series of conference workshops :
Wilde, D., Vallgårda, A., Tomico, O. Embodied Design Ideation methods: analysing the power of estrangement. In Proc. Human Factors in Computing Systems. CHI2017. ACM (2017): 5158-5170.
