*To the list,*
We are all familiar with typical design process models, and many of us have
spent thousands of hours teaching our students (and ourselves) to work
through various stages of it. Along the way, we frequently dive into
parallel explorations of technologies, social sciences, or related
industries that inform and shape the trajectory of our work. It is just
part of the fun. Before all that, the processes typically start with an
identified problem/opportunity and/or some kind of divergent phase of idea
generation. So with that in mind...
*Do you agree it is the domain of design, to train designers to create more
radical, powerful, and prophetic visions and ideas? *
*If yes, then*
*//* For all the things we like to debate are "in" or "not in" the realm
of design as an academic discipline, it would seem that creating new ideas
is a common component. *Is there a body of design research I've not found
that digs into the mechanics of ideation beyond standard practices such as
sketching as thinking, speaking out loud stuff, or little yellow post-it
exercises.*
*// *Why do we simply assume we – as any given practitioner – is well
positioned to imagine a truly alternative, and powerful future? *Are all
'ideators' equal?* *How do we know?* How do we train better ideators?
*//*
*To what extent have other members of this list also sought out and applied
research findings on Vision and Ideation outside the traditional domains of
design to positive effect within research/practice/teaching? NOT
sketching, decentralized design thinking exercises, but specific methods
extracted from fields such as neuroscience, archaeology, or otherwise? **What
have you learned? *
Best Wishes,
Mitchell

PS. Maybe we should start a ListServ world-wide design drinking game for
everytime someone says "it's not the idea, it's in the execution," or some
similar comment. Cheers.
