This is a gentle reminder that the CFP for the joint British Forum for
Ethnomusicology/Société Française d'Ethnomusicologie Conference on the
theme of Digital Arts and Humanities in Ethnomusicology closes on 25 June.
The conference which will take place at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris
on 23-25 September 2022 .

*Rationale of the choice of theme. *

During the Covid pandemic, the academic world turned towards technology,
digital tools and alternative media forms not only to support the
transmission of ideas, research and teaching, but also to continue carrying
out fieldwork. Musicians also adapted their use of these tools by producing
sound and music online, which in turn enabled them to explore new
opportunities and to engage in innovative collaborations, opening doors to
new audiences that had been hitherto inaccessible. Alongside the rise of
digital tools, contemporary ethnomusicology is faced with many questions,
some of which emerge directly from our experiences over the last two years.

   - How has our fieldwork changed, and what can we learn from colleagues
   who have been carrying out hybrid or online fieldwork for many years?
   - What are the role and place of digital tools today as a means and a
   method for ethnomusicological fieldwork and experimentation?
   - How have these technologies created a new impetus and valorised
   research, including collaborative and participatory work, and touched
   audiences previously unreachable due to distance, language barriers or
   disinformation?
   - What kinds of issues have arisen around ethics and how useful are
   alternative publication platforms?
   - Have the new relations built with musicians from around the world
   changed our thoughts about access to research, in particular work behind
   paywalls?
   - How do digital tools enable the development of archives, databases,
   complex and resource-heavy websites, information and media (audio, video,
   iconography, testimonials, etc), and how do they link them together?
   - Looking beyond the valorisation of sources and their widened access,
   how have artists and researchers organised collaboration through digital
   tools? Have the latter triggered new relationships with sound and
   recording, key elements of our discipline?
   - Finally, how have these opportunities or constraints opened new
   avenues for ethnomusicologists in France and the UK, and what can we learn
   from each other?

The conference will focus on the following themes:

   1.

   Platforms: digital archiving, open access archives, streaming and social
   media
   2.

   Access: wider audiences, dissemination, alternative platforms and
   publications
   3.

   Digital and/or hybrid fieldwork: digital space, ethics, timelines and
   encounters.
   4.

   Digital arts and technical developments: digital analysis of sound,
   tools, methods
   5.

   Digital collaborations and internationalisation: horizontal
   participation,

   interdisciplinarity, and gatekeeping (or lack of)

Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words, and should also feature a
short biography and bibliography. The deadline for submissions is 25 June
2022. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by 15 July 2022 to

Avec l’arrivée de la pandémie, le monde académique a plus que jamais dû
faire face à la nécessité de faire appel aux outils et médias numériques et
technologiques non seulement pour assurer la continuité de la transmission
de la pensée, des savoirs, de l’enseignement, entre autres, mais aussi pour
continuer la recherche ainsi que le travail de terrain. En parallèle, les
musiciens ont également recalibré leur usage de ces outils en produisant
leurs sons et musique en ligne, ce qui leur a permis d’explorer de nouvelles
opportunités et de collaborer de manière innovante, ouvrant les portes à de
nouveaux publics jusqu’alors inaccessibles. Avec l’accélération de l’outil
numérique, l'ethnomusicologie contemporaine peut se poser de nombreuses
questions, certaines émergeant directement de nos expériences pendant ces
deux dernières années.

   - A quel point notre travail de terrain a-t-il changé, et que peut-on
   apprendre de nos collègues ayant entrepris un terrain hybride ou en ligne
   depuis de nombreuses années?
   - Quelle est la place aujourd’hui du numérique comme moyen et méthode
   pour le travail de recherche et d’expérimentation des ethnomusicologues ?
   - Comment ces technologies permettent-elles de dynamiser et de valoriser
   la recherche (travaux collaboratifs et participatifs) et de toucher des
   publics auparavant inaccessibles du fait de la distance, des barrières de
   la langue (outils de traduction) ou de la désinformation (renforcement des
   réseaux scientifiques) ?
   - Quelle réflexion a-t-on autour de l’éthique et des plateformes de
   publications alternatives et en ligne?
   - Nos nouvelles relations en ligne avec des musiciens autour du monde
   changent-elles la réflexion autour de l'accès à notre recherche, notamment
   les publications soumises à des accès payants (‘paywall’)?
   - Comment les outils numériques permettent-ils de proposer des archives,
   banques de données, sites internet riches et complexes en termes de
   ressources, d’informations, de médias (audio, vidéo, iconographie,
   témoignages, etc.) et de les interconnecter ?
   - Enfin, au-delà de la valorisation inestimable de ces sources et de
   leur accès de plus en plus répandu, comment s’organisent les
   collaborations artistes/chercheurs par le biais de ces outils, et
   comment permettent-elles un nouveau rapport au son et à l’enregistrement,
   matériau-clé de notre discipline ?
   - Comment ces opportunités et contraintes ouvrent-elles de nouvelles
   voies pour les ethnomusicologues en France et au Royaume-Uni, et que
   pouvons-nous apprendre les uns des autres?

Ces journées d’études s’articuleront autour de plusieurs axes principaux:

1-Plateformes: archives numériques, archives ouvertes, streaming et réseaux
sociaux

2- Accès: autres publics, diffusion, plateformes et publications
alternatives

3-Travail de terrain numérique et/ou hybride: espaces, éthique, temps et
rencontres numériques

4-Arts numériques et apports techniques : analyse du son, outils, méthodes

5-Collaborations numériques et relations internationales: participation
horizontale, interdisciplinarité, barrières hiérarchiques (ou leur absence)

Les propositions de communication de 500 mots maximum, accompagnées d’une
courte bio-bibliographie, devront être adressées avant le 25 juin 2022. Il
sera répondu aux propositions avant le 15 juillet 2022 à l’adresse
