*Talk Description*
Design, Policy and Public Futures
In this talk Lucy will present exemplars associated of ‘design for policy’, drawing on her practice and research as well as examples from her PhD students’ work. Design practices are seen as useful in public policy development because design is ‘human’ or ‘citizen’-centred and focussed on people’s experiences – but what are the consequences of these claims in the context of public policy development in democracies? How do forms of insight and design processes intersect with contemporary practices in policy development? The discussion will surface some of the opportunities and implications associated with using design to address public policy.

*Speaker Bio*
Lucy Kimbell is Director of the Social Design Institute, and Professor of Contemporary Design Practices at University of the Arts London. She is also Associate Fellow at Said Business School, University of Oxford where she was on the faculty for five years. Her research looks at the emergence and development of ‘design thinking’ and the use of design expertise to address organisational, social and public policy issues. Her approach involves combining literature in design studies with strands of social research including organisation studies
and science and technology studies.
Lucy is an experienced researcher, postgraduate educator, and strategic design consultant. She has spent much of her career on design’s fringes, intersecting with other disciplines and contexts including social innovation and policy. She has been involved in research, teaching and assessment within leading international universities for over a decade, with a particular focus on the role of design in society, services, and innovation.
Lucy was recently co-investigator on two UKRI funded projects which are cross-disciplinary and co-produced with non-academic partners using design to explore and addresses social issues including AI and anti-microbial resistance. With Guy Julier, she was co-investigator on two AHRC projects exploring social design. Lucy was AHRC design research fellow in Policy Lab, a team in the Cabinet Office in 2014-15, and also worked with a team in the EU Joint Research Centre using foresight and design to develop policy.
