This special issue invites submissions that will broaden the theoretical
and applied
knowledge base surrounding design education. COVID-19 has accelerated design
teaching towards a more flexible model incorporating online delivery. Given
the
traditional emphasis on the development and practice of hands-on
techniques, there
are significant questions to be answered about how these developments affect
pedagogical approaches for the future of this field. The interplay between
technology,
students and the design studio are yielding challenges but also
opportunities to
flourish in the way design education of the future is shaped. As the
COVID-19
pandemic rages on, design educators globally face increasing pressure to
engage
their students and maintain the same quality graduate outcomes as before.
Yet,
limited attention has been given to how this has been done and how it could
impact
the next generation of graduating designers. All submissions will undergo a
doubleblind peer review process.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Conceptualisation and development of current design teaching and learning
environments
• The problems facing design education now and, in the future
• Design pedagogy methods, practices and impact
• A critical appraisal of design education
• Theoretical developments of design education from a non-design perspective
• Critical commentary of the development of design education theory and
practice over time
• Technology in the classroom and design learning spaces
• Teaching and learning strategies for teaching design online
• Design curriculum development for interdisciplinary collaboration
• Practical development of interdisciplinary collaboration in design
education through case studies
