Hello everyone,
When we talk about history of citizen/design participation, I recall a Polish book from about 1978 on participatory design methods. I was a review of over 50 such methods from US and Scandinavia. Some methods were from the 1950s. The book claimed that citizen participation in government and management was used in Sweden in the 1950. I am not a historian, so... But it is quite evident to me that citizen/design participation in architecture and urban planning has its roots in the 1950s.
When we talk about design we should add an adjective. There are over 800 or 1,200 design fields. Some are brand new. And some a quite old. It is interesting to track how each field borrows ideas, concepts, and terminology from other fields, how they change them to claim invention, and how they bustardize really good concepts because they didn't understand them. Or just wanted to make something new. Or, to adapt it to their field, which I respect.
Well, if we look at aerospace industry, they cannot repeat the human crew flight to the Moon, some 50 years later. Isn't this appalling? It is the same situation in philosophy, humanities, and the realm of ideas.
Best wishes,
Lubomir

Thanks, David
That confirms my suspicion that there is a much longer history to this than
most people realize. I also got similar responses from a friend in India,
again dating in the 1970s
