The Department of Design at The Ohio State University, in partnership with the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), seeks a recent graduate of an MFA program in Design or a closely allied field for a two-year post-MFA research position. In the spirit of more common post-doctoral research positions, the purpose of this opportunity is to provide the selected applicant with support and encouragement to deepen their cross-disciplinary practices by extending their research portfolio by engaging with faculty members who are affiliated with the department and/or the research center. The Department of Design supports the study of design research and disciplinary-specific as well as collaborative design practices at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and it promotes creative efforts that foster positive social impacts. Faculty members offer expertise in industrial, interior, and visual communication design, design research, co-design, design history, design strategy, digital animation and interactive media, game design, animation, visual storytelling, and designing with emerging technology. ACCAD is a collaborative innovation center, focused in the areas of computer graphics, immersive media and mediated performance. The research hosted by ACCAD centers on the use and integration of emerging arts technologies. Both units are housed in the College of Arts and Sciences; the largest college at Ohio State and the academic heart of the university, with 38 departments, 20+ research centers, and more than 2,000 faculty and staff members. Ohio State values diversity and offers a supportive, open, and inclusive community.
Priority for consideration will be given to persons whose research interests use emerging technologies and innovative visual and experiential storytelling to advance the possibilities of generative design practices. Applications from researchers in UX/UI design, game design, XR design, virtual production, data visualization, real-time graphics, or computer animation will be especially welcome. The Department of Design and ACCAD alike take pride in encouraging research that has the potential to make a positive social impact. Work geared toward increasing diversity in the design professions will be welcomed. Projects that leverage the resources of the department's Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability (DESIS) Lab, ACCAD's research labs, our comprehensive land-grant university and/or the vibrant design community of Columbus, Ohio more broadly is encouraged.
Recognizing the relationship of practice-based research with design education, the Post-MFA fellow will teach one course each of the four semesters of the position in support of each sponsoring unit. Teaching assignments will be made based on the successful applicant's areas of expertise. Post-MFA researchers should anticipate spending 75% of their time on creative research. This includes participating in a collaborative research community made up of faculty mentors, graduate students, and the university's research community and assets. A modest research support fund will be provided on an annual basis.
Applicants to this position who are within three years of the completion of a masters-level terminal degree in Design or a closely allied field will be given priority. Interested persons should submit a current CV, a link to an online portfolio of research-based projects, a research plan with specific strategies for near-term development, and a statement the articulates the applicant's approach to ensuring that diverse perspectives are incorporated into their establishment of research topics, questions, and the methods used in their work. Two letters of recommendation are required. Review of materials will begin on 1/15/22, and will continue until the position is filled.
Thank you,
Dr. Mary Anne Beecher, Chair
