Dear Francois,
On November 22, you suggested that we read a conference paper by Halina Dunin-Woyseth and Liv Merete Nielsen (2003). To explain why, you wrote: “The article makes a clear distinction between ‘know how’, a kind of knowledge needed to be developed in/for the design field at the University level, the ‘Science of the artificial’, and ‘know that’ pursued in other already well established academic disciplines. I found it a good debut in our reflection to affirm as well design within the University set-up.”
The paper claims to “discuss the epistemological premises of the Doctoral Program.” It does not do so. Rather, it neglects the epistemological literature.
The paper briefly mentions the concepts of “knowing how” and “knowing that” proposed by Gilbert Ryle, but it doesn’t address Ryle’s work. The paper completely neglects six decades of careful inquiry between Ryle’s (1946) paper and this paper from 2003.
Many people in design argue that design research involves knowing how. This is true because all research involves some form of knowing how.
But design research involves more than knowing how. Design research also involves knowing that. We describe the experiential nature of knowing how by explaining THAT we know HOW.
Much of the literature cited by Dunin-Woyseth and Nielsen doesn't support their claims.
Epistemology should be an aspect of the conversation on design in the university and the role of research in design. It can also advance reflection on the PhD degree and doctoral education in design.
This paper offers little for that reflection.
Yours
Ken
