The Music department at Oxford Brookes University invites applications for
a fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach our first-year undergraduate
module Critical Listening and Music Theory. The module will run
face-to-face at our Headington campus in Oxford (subject to COVID guidance)
in semester 2 of the 2021/22 academic year.
The semester comprises 12 weeks; it commences on 24th January 2022 and
concludes in the week starting 25th April, with two weeks of Easter break
preceding the final teaching week. An allowance will be made for the
marking and assessment period which runs into May 2022. The module is
currently scheduled for Thursday afternoons at 1pm, but flexibility around
timetabling may be possible for the successful candidate.
The module teaches central principles of music theory, either as an
introduction or as a critical review of students’ prior learning. Students
will gain proficiency in reading musical notation
and an awareness of core analytical categories in score-based musical
works. The lecturer should have a PhD in music theory or a related
discipline, an ability to draw on “classical” and “popular” repertoires,
and ideally experience in engaging students with prior experiences in a
wide range of musical traditions.
The Music department will offer support in the administration of the module.
Please send a brief cover letter outlining your suitability for the role
and a CV to [log in to unmask] by Sunday 14th November, 23:59.
Interviews will be held virtually during the week commencing Monday 22nd
November. Informal enquiries about the role or module are also welcome,
directed to the same email address. You can find out more about the BA
Music programme at Oxford Brookes here:

The University has adopted equality, diversity and inclusion as core
values. We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates whatever
