Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of Bach Network, I am delighted to announce that the third issue of our multimedia open access publication, Discussing Bach, has now been published!
This issue is about the competition that eventually led to J.S. Bach's appointment as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. But what happened before he was chosen? Who did the town council approach first, and why? And why did the forerunners decline? Listen to experts Steven Zohn (Telemann), Michael Maul (Bach), Barbara Reul (Fasch), and Ursula Kramer (Graupner) to hear the unfolding story and ideas about other possible outcomes.
You can read all about it, and watch the thirty-minute video (with English subtitles) on YouTube and at https://bachnetwork.org/discussing-bach. There are also two new articles, by Zohn and Reul, commissioned especially for this issue. Please share with colleagues, friends, and use in teaching where appropriate.
If you missed the two earlier issues of Discussing Bach, on the topics of ‘Bach and Emotion’ (2020) and ‘Bach and Jesus (2021), they can also be found via the link above.
With best wishes,
Andrew Frampton
