Rotary Prize
Giacomo Puccini Research 2021
1. The Rotary Club of Lucca and the Centro studi GIACOMO PUCCINI, with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, announce the “Rotary Giacomo Puccini Research Prize,” to be awarded to a scholar intending to carry out research on a Puccinian topic. The research will be completed by submission of a hitherto unpublished monograph.
2. The prize consists of € 10,000 (ten thousand Euros), of which 20 % will be paid at the time of the award and the remaining 80% after the approval of the finished study by the Awards Committee. If approved, the monograph will be published by the Centro studi GIACOMO PUCCINI within twelve months of submission.
3. Participation in the competition involves submission of a detailed research proposal and a curriculum vitae. Proposals can be written in Italian, English, French, or German. In addition to the subject, the proposal should include the materials the candidate intends to use in the research.
4. Applications must arrive by the deadline at the office of the Centro studi GIACOMO PUCCINI in Lucca, Casermetta San Colombano 1, Mura urbane, either via registered mail (validated by postmark) or e-mail pdf. “Premio Rotary 2021” should be clearly indicated on the postal envelope or as the subject of the e-mail.
5. The Committee judging the research proposals will consist of the President of the Centro studi GIACOMO PUCCINI (or her representative), the President pro tempore of the Rotary Club of Lucca (or his representative), and three other representatives of each of these two organizations. The Centro studi GIACOMO PUCCINI will nominate the chair of the committee, whose vote will be decisive in case of a tie. The Committee can also award special mention, and retains the right not to award the Prize.
6. In evaluating applications, the Committee will consider the following criteria:
a) originality of the proposed research project
b) relevance of the methodology to be used
c) scholarly qualifications of the applicant
d) feasibility of completing the project within the time limit stated above.
The Committee will decide the winner of the prize within 45 days of the deadline for submission of project proposals.
7. The total time allowed for completion of the project is three years, with a detailed progress report to be submitted at the end of the first and second years in one of the languages mentioned above (3). At the end of the third year the recipient will deliver a completed manuscript ready for publication. Limited extensions of a period not to exceed three months may be granted at the discretion of the Committee. The manuscript will be submitted for the approval of the Committee, which will reach a decision within a month of receipt. In cases where the monograph is not approved by the Committee or not submitted within the deadline, it will not be published and the balance of the prize will not be awarded.
8. At the time the final manuscript is submitted, the winner of the prize is required to furnish copies of documentary material independently acquired during the course of research.
Applications must arrive at the office of the Centro studi GIACOMO PUCCINI by 29 November 2021.
Results of the competition will be announced by 22 December 2021.
