Excellent post and tips Milena!
My PhD supervisor's research area was doctoral research pedagogy and
she taught me:
* My personal favourite: a PhD is not about how
clever/smart/innovative you are, it's about learning to live with the
uncertainty of not knowing (my peers and I were going to have this
printed on a t-shirt)
* Don't expect to understand something the first time around
* Organise the week according to ABC time – similar to the dull
pencil. A time is data collection, reading, writing, etc. B time is
supervision meetings, locating information, setting up meetings, etc.
C time is down/family time (like weekends)
* Do something on the PhD every day (even if it's sorting out papers,
linked to 2)
* Audio record supervision sessions – because the to and fro of the
conversation is what moves your thinking forward; and your supervisor
often says something important and you don't hear them because you're
busy talking/thinking/not understanding (linked to 1)
* Thinking with your mouth – is when your supervisor speaks
speculatively (not instructively) during a supervision session and you
take what they say verbatim, because you recorded the session (linked
to 5)
* If you think you don't have expectations around the PhD, do a list
of fears (you will find links)
* Be prepared to say 'I don't know' if someone asks a question you
can't answer
All the best, those starting out or completing doctorates.teena
