Your question is so timely. I was just planning on asking the listserv if it was ok if I posted about my project. I'm a graduate student in Industrial Design and long-time lurker of the PhD-Design listserv. My thesis, which I plan to continue post-graduation, is licensed via a Creative Commons Attribution/Share Alike license, which makes it a free cultural work. I chose this license to increase accessibility and because, conceptually, it was the best fit for my project.
I've developed alternatives to plastic-based modeling materials. Cai Board can replace extruded polystyrene foam in most situations and Cai Clay is an alternative to air drying clays. I've written a book on how to make them and created a website where I've assembled online collaborative tools. The DIY nature of the project provides students with more financially accessible modeling materials while encouraging them to think about their design work through experimental and sustainable lenses. That's why I wanted to share it with this group, because I'm hoping to see design schools and students adopt these materials. The other project component that I hope will appeal to design educators is the GitHub repository I've created. I noticed in my program and online that design students were having to reinvent the wheel when it came to experimental design projects because of a lack of shared knowledge. This resource is free to everyone, and it's all open source. The platform, GitHub, was created for open source coding.
If it's ok, I'll send links along to my project.
Thank you,
Mari Miller
