Hi TeachLingers,
I teach a class on world English(es). There are two assessments: a series of
mini-essays relating to the lectures; and a research interview with someone from
another country (about the use of English there).
One of the mini-essay questions is about international use of English in higher
education. At present it's quite a general question looking at contemporary debate. I
want to tweak this question to make it more specific, focusing on universities'
institutional language policies. I was thinking of making it into a task where they
search online for, say, five universities' language policies in different countries
(using key words like '[city] university language policy English') and then
systematically comparing them on a set of key themes which should come up in most of
them, like international recruitment (of staff and students), mobility, research
publications, etc.
Does anyone currently set any assignments like this? Any suggestions if so?
Dave
