Dear Colleagues, Students and Friends of Design Research,
We are happy to share that registration is now open for the 2021 Online Swiss Design Network Conference
Design as Common Good:
Framing Design through Pluralism and Social Values.
In light of social, economic, technological and environmental challenges, design researchers, practitioners as well as communities constantly and critically address and question the contribution of design to the common good. The common good as conceptualized by the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Zalta et al., 2018) “benefits society as a whole – in contrast to the private good of individuals and sections of society.” Design as a discipline has long been positioned from the context of developing and catering to the private good, focusing on individual and smaller sections of society - largely leaving its contributions to the common good underexplored. With our conference Design as Common Good, the conference will reflect upon what constitutes a common good and specifically what constitutes a common good in and through design.
This year’s conference takes the form of a working conference with panels and workshops that have been co-developed by roughly 170 authors and contributors over the past months in slack working groups. Come and see where they have found common themes, generated questions and discovered new opportunities for design and designers to tackle problems of social and public value!
Join the online conference on March 25th and March 26th 2021. Please note that Workshops are limited in their participation, we recommend you secure your spot right away.
This year’s conference is unusually affordable with student prices starting at 45 CHF and maximum tickets 65 CHF, an explicit effort by co-chairs Prof. Dr. Massimo Botta from the Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI) and Prof. Sabine Junginger, PhD from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) to increase accessibility and participation.
