Elio,
There are good reasons to do research on Human-Centered design, and
certainly also to talk about it. Especially now.
In my own work, the core issue is human interaction with autonomous or
automated systems (e.g. for control of mission critical processes,
such as transportation systems).
There are several reasons to address this from a Human-Centered stance.
Let me present just one reason, to maintain human autonomy in
human-"autonomous machine" relations. For instance, to avoid the
peculiar or impossible situations that humans still can end up in,
with automated systems. For instance, if they are seen as "the cause"
of unwanted situations, or if they rely on services from affected
systems, or if they are harmed directly by a system failure. Issues
such as this one are both connected to the world views of system
designers, and to technology itself. However, with different
perspectives during design, we can work with automation/autonomy, but
achieve other outcomes for humans on the "sharp end" of technology.
Perspectives are also embedded in tools, methods, and sub-cultures, so
there is much work to do.
I could go on for some time discussing various reasons, since I have
been working on these issues for many years. (e.g. in these projects:
https://liu.se/en/research/amplify-teamwork-with-automation )
But this one issue alone is important enough, in my opinion, to
continue work on human-centered design. And that is just one issue,
from a particular sub-field, the design of joint cognitive systems.
Best regards
Jonas
