Nigel Cross´s point about Jones´s book, Design Methods-
(Jones, J. C. (1992). Design methods. John Wiley & Sons.)
has prompted me to offer a recommendation for any of you who have not read it. The early sections on the craftsman are illuminating.
Also, there´s a small detour on the stage in the design process called incubation. Any of you doing a PhD and who find themselves staring at the goldfish or raking the gravel by way of displacement activities are incubating. I am not being that flippant: I took a pause from my PhD and the moments when observers might have seen me standing with a pram (small child on board) were moments of incubation which mattered a lot to my project. This is relevant to understanding the perhaps over-looked role of subconscious mental activity in design but also its role in your writing process (i.e. not writing might be a good thing to do from time to time).
