Dear all,
Bloomsbury Digital Resources is pleased to announce that our digital platform, Bloomsbury Design Library, has been updated with a newly curated feature - ‘Design and the Pandemic: maker culture, practices of care, and meaningful objects’ (https://www.bloomsburydesignlibrary.com/featured-this-month), which brings together relevant content from across the platform on this topic from leading authors and contributors.
We hope that this update could be useful and of interest to members of the PHD-DESIGN list.
The new featured theme on Bloomsbury Design Library offers free access to a handpicked selection of book chapters, articles, and a museum object. Our Designer Focus this quarter looks back at the life and work of British textile designer, Althea McNish.
Users can:
• Take a look back at the history of DIY and read about the potential of modern-day DIY and contemporary maker culture, with its rise in popularity during the pandemic.
• Learn about design as a practice of care, and the politics and logistics of ergonomic office design, as designers have found themselves recently having to reconsider practices and collaborations with organizations, facilities and health services.
• Discover the history of emotive design, given that in recent times many of us have cast a creative eye on our homes and filled the space with meaningful objects. Read about the power of design and our relationships with objects as they exert an emotional influence beyond their function.
• Hear about the work of Althea McNish (https://www.bloomsburydesignlibrary.com/featured-this-month#Althea) in an interview with her partner John Weiss, as he discusses the enduring design influence of her use of textures and vibrant colours in the textile industry.
