Achieving Togetherness in Ensemble Performance Symposium (ATEP)
6–8 July 2022

Vienna (Austria)
Conference Website: https://mdw.ac.at/togetherness/atep-symposium/
Description
Togetherness emerges when people play music together in professional, casual, educational, and therapeutic settings, and it makes group music-making a socially as well as aesthetically rewarding activity. Highly-trained ensemble musicians strive to achieve multidimensional levels of togetherness, including coherence in timing, expressive parameters, and/or body gestures. In addition, many performers often experience moments of heightened togetherness, and report feelings of being in cognitive synchrony with their co-performer(s).
This symposium centers on how togetherness is achieved and emerges between members of a performing ensemble, and it is perceived by audiences and performers. By bringing together academics, music performers, and teachers from related fields, ATEP aims to offer an interdisciplinary perspective on togetherness in ensemble performance. Disciplines may include music performance, music technology, music education, psychology, sociology, ethnomusicology, audio engineering, acoustics, and computer science, among others.
