Dear all (and especially Heads of Department)
Please forward the following message from Edoardo Chidichimo to your undergraduate students.

Join the EDIMS reading group for undergraduates and discuss issues concerning musicology and ethnomusicology, musical practice and performance, music theory, decolonising curriculums, and a multitude of other pressing and current issues. The group will run twice a term with light reading/videos as a basis for discussion with additional (non-compulsory) reading, should you wish to read further.
Email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> (Edoardo Chidichimo) if you would like to join, and feel free to share with anyone who may have an interest, too. The zoom link will be sent at least one day in advance.
For the first session (Monday 22nd March 1-2pm GMT) we will consider The White Racial Frame of Music Theory and how this not only affects our curriculums but interaction (including methodological research, appropriation, performativity etc.) with "other" musical communities and cultures. Please watch the following Adam Neely video in advance (I would recommend the entire video as it is very interesting, but primarily from 00:00-08:25):

Here is the main reading the discussion will be based on (not obligatory):

Here are some of the general questions we will discuss based on the video and your own experiences and opinions:
- What is (and what are the implications of) this "White Racial Frame"?
- Consequently, why do we need to reframe and restructure academic discourse, research, performances, and curriculums?
- Is it possible to decolonise the frame or is the Western convention too deeply engrained?
- Why do we prioritise, as Neely puts it, "the harmonic style of 18th-Century European musicians"?
- How should we approach music theory?
- What does the future look like for music studies (in terms of the white racial frame)?
All members are welcome to propose texts, articles, poems, videos, and any other sources to be discussed for future meetings.
I look forward to meeting you all and discussing how and why we must strive to decolonise our curriculums and practices (if such a thing can occur)!
"
